OIM Orthopaedics spearheads 3D scanning

Shapemakers is one of the suppliers with which OIM Orthopaedics is making the move to 3D scanning. Less laborious, faster, location independent and cheaper, these are some of the list of advantages 3D scanning brings over traditional sizing and correction techniques.

Working with white light and iPad scanners

OIM Orthopaedics now uses both white light and Ipad scanners. These scanners are used in fitting both orthopaedic shoes and instruments. Shapemakers is involved in scanning for orthopaedic instruments, such as ankle-foot orthoses, prostheses, corsets, splints and more. OIM and Shapemakers also recently signed a 3-year contract for milling all parts for orthopaedic instruments at OIM Orthopaedics.

Quality of care remains the higher goal

For us, the higher goal is always to provide excellent quality device care to our clients. In doing so, we see scanning as a valuable addition to the tools our orthopaedic consultants already use," said Fred Verhagen, division manager of OIM . "We are gaining as much experience as possible with 3D scanning in a short period of time, giving enthusiastic colleagues all the space they need to experiment with meaningful application."

Practical experiences with 3D scanning

Niels Admiraal, orthopaedic specialist in Noordwijkerhout, is one of those enthusiasts:

"To enable broad adaptation of scanning, I and other colleagues developed an online course. If the hardware and software work well and colleagues also know how to use it, it becomes easier to overcome obstacles. All signals are now green to make it a success. I really like that, because I am very enthusiastic about 3D scanning."

Nina van Bergen, orthopaedic consultant in Haren, compares white light scanners to iPad scanners:

"I honestly prefer working with the white-light scanner, but the iPad scanner does have significant advantages. Most importantly, it's easy to take with you, so you don't have to take a whole suitcase of equipment and a laptop to a remote consultation. Another advantage is that you don't have to stick dots as a reference."

3D scanning as a spearhead for the coming years

OIM Orthopaedics is using this year to master 3D scanning. This includes determining which clients will benefit from the technology and which will not. Among other things, 3D scanning is expected to generate efficiency gains and facilitate cooperation between the 28 branches in the Netherlands. This is why OIM Orthopaedics is also making 3D scanning a spearhead for the coming years.
