3D printers for seating and recumbent orthoses

A sitting or lying orthosis requires more than a good shape. The material determines how pressure is distributed, what the microclimate feels like and how long the product lasts. Create it Real's Embrace Seatmaker is a 3D printer developed specifically for the production of seat and recumbent orthoses, with a material that outperforms traditional foams on all these points. Shapemakers is both production partner for outsourcing and supplier of the Embrace Seatmaker for companies wishing to produce their own.

Embrace Seatmaker Printer

The Embrace Seatmaker: a printer built for mobility solutions

The Embrace Seatmaker is a 3D printer with a workspace of 60 by 60 by 65 centimetres, designed for printing seating and recumbent orthoses. The printer works with certified soft TPU filament, is equipped with automatic coil change and automatic calibration, and is built for unattended production. The digital workflow runs from scan to finished product, with no manual intermediate steps.

The manufacturing process is clean and quiet enough for use in a workshop or office environment. No dust, no complex technical requirements, no environmental adjustments needed.

Programmable Foam: the material that makes a difference

The material the Embrace Seatmaker prints with is not standard TPU. Programmable Foam is a certified Soft TPU material developed specifically for orthopaedic seatingand lying solutions. The slicing software makes it possible to set a different hardness per zone, increasing from extra soft through soft and medium to hard and extra hard. This allows finely tuned comfort per body part, within the same product.

The basis for this is a gyroid structure generated by the slicing software. That structure distributes pressure over a larger area than conventional foam, reducing peak pressure on vulnerable body areas. Transitions between hardness zones are smooth, not abrupt.

The material is non-absorbent and washable up to 60 degrees. The open print structure promotes air circulation, contributing to a better microclimate under the user. Relevant for anyone sitting or lying in the same position for long periods of time.

Production generates virtually no waste. The material is biocompatible, meets fire safety standards (EN 1021-1 and EN 1021-2) and is suitable for TPU recycling. From production to replacement: a closed chain.

Produce in-house or outsource?

Outsourcing to Shapemakers is the choice if you want to keep the focus on design and treatment, without in-house production hardware. You supply the digital file, Shapemakers prints the orthosis in Programmable Foam and delivers it back ready to use.

Producing in-house with the Seatmaker is the choice if you want to build your own production capacity. Shapemakers supplies the printer, takes care of implementation and remains available as a maintenance partner. So you are operational, without having to fully master the technology yourself.

From digital design to printed seat or orthosis

  1. Designs in seating and orthotics software
  2. Generation of print file via direct link
  3. Printing the orthosis in Programmable Foam
  4. Quality control on fit and finish
