What mobility products can you have manufactured? 

We produce both milled and 3D-printed seating and recumbent solutions, such as: 

  • seating orthoses 
  • seating shells 
  • recumbent orthoses 
  • back and seating components 
  • customised components for complete seating and reclining systems 

We supply some products as complete finished items, whilst others are supplied as moulds or components that you can process further yourself. We also combine milling and 3D printing within a single solution, for example a printed shell with a milled cushion inside. Does your application differ from this? Please discuss it with us.

Outsourcing milling for mobility solutions 

We mill seating and lying moulds from soft foam (HDH 35100 and Polyether 4080), in various degrees of firmness depending on the desired level of support. The milling machine follows your digital design exactly, right down to the details of the pressure distribution you have specified. 

After milling, we deliver the mould cleaned and inspected; you usually carry out the covering and further finishing yourself. For larger products, such as complete mattresses, we discuss the maximum dimensions and lead time in advance. Don’t have your own milling machine suitable for large soft-foam products? Then outsourcing is a straightforward solution.

Outsourcing 3D printing for mobility 

Using Programmable Foam®, we print sitting and lying orthoses directly from your digital design. Thanks to a gyroid structure, you can combine multiple zones of firmness within a single product – something that is not possible with traditional foam: softer zones for pressure relief, firmer zones for support, all blending seamlessly into one another. 

The material is skin-friendly, washable at up to 60 degrees and breathable for a comfortable fit. In your design file, you specify the desired hardness zones and dimensions; we print, check and deliver the product ready for use. One-off solutions and prototypes are also possible, as are projects where specific material properties or certifications are required. Please feel free to discuss this with us in advance. 

Why outsource the production of mobility solutions? 

No need to invest in large milling machines or industrial 3D printers, and no need to acquire technical production expertise in-house. More space in your own workshop, and easier scalability to accommodate fluctuating production volumes. 

Digital designs are reproducible: you can tailor an existing product to specific requirements and produce it again, with less manual processing than before. Through a single partner, you have access to multiple production techniques, leaving more time for taking measurements, design, fitting and user support. Would you like to gain experience with a new material such as Programmable Foam® before investing in it? This can be done through outsourcing.

This is how the production of a seating or recumbent solution works 

  1. You capture the body shape and posture. 
  2. You design the solution digitally. 
  3. The file is supplied to Shapemakers. 
  4. We assess technical manufacturability. 
  5. The product is milled or 3D-printed. 
  6. We check dimensions and finish. 
  7. The product is supplied ready for immediate use or further processing. 

The clinical decisions, such as positioning and pressure distribution, always remain with you. Together, we determine which production technique best suits your design. We’ll get in touch promptly with any technical queries, and we’ll process repeat orders or amendments based on the file you’ve previously supplied. 

Shapemakers’ services 

We work with you to select materials and production techniques, and support you with file submission. For your first orders, we guide you step by step, so you’ll quickly know what to expect from us. Are you making the switch from manual to digital production? We’ll help you get started with that too. 

You can place and track your orders yourself via the order portal. We assess special sizes or non-standard applications in advance, so you won’t face any surprises. We’re easy to get hold of, and if you’d prefer to work with a dedicated point of contact, we’ll arrange that for you. Whether you’re outsourcing (for the time being) or plan to start manufacturing in-house in the long term, we’ll work with you to find the best solution in both cases.
