3D foot scanners for podiatry

Good treatment starts with good data. A 3D foot scan captures the shape, position and contour of the foot in a few minutes with high accuracy. Without foam or plaster, without fuss. The result is a reliable digital file that you can use directly in your design software for orthotics and orthotics. At Shapemakers, we are happy to help you find your ideal 3D foot scanner.

What is a podiatric 3D foot scanner?

A 3D foot scanner digitally records the three-dimensional shape of the foot. You notice the impact of such a scan immediately in your daily working methods. Instead of a foam box or plaster cast, you get an exact digital copy of the foot shape. Complete with contours, foot arch, position and pressure distribution.

The output is a directly usable 3D file that you easily import into your design software, such as LutraCAD or similar packages. No more printing material or physical storage is needed, and there are no differences in interpretation. Just reproducible foot data that you can use directly for production with a 3D printer.

3D foot scan vs traditional foot measurements

As a podiatrist, you know all too well the limitations of traditional foot measurement. A foam box impression is sensitive to the way you place the foot. A plaster cast impression takes time and requires interpretation when reading out. And when a patient returns, the results are often difficult to reproduce.

A 3D foot scanner works differently. Foam and plaster react to pressure and posture. That affects the end result every time. A 3D foot scan removes those variables. This is because the measurement is standardised, the output is digital and the data remains available.

Your foot data always available

The main advantage of a digital scan lies in its reusability. Each scan is saved as a digital file, so you automatically build a file for each patient that you can always retrieve.

At a follow-up appointment, you then work from exactly the same basis. By comparing scans over time, you make the treatment process more transparent. Adjustments are made based on the original 3D foot scan, without remeasuring. And if a patient needs a new set of podiatric insoles, you have all the data ready.

The benefits of a 3D foot scanner in podiatry

In practice, a 3D foot scanner provides the following:

  • Shorter turnaround time due to faster intake: a digital foot measurement takes 2 to 5 minutes, a traditional impression a lot longer
  • Less variation by material behaviour or performer
  • Visual 3D data helps explain to patients
  • Better fit through standardised, reproducible data
  • More efficient repeat appointments with fewer operations and therefore more time for the craftsmanship itself
  • Direct link to design software, no manual transfer

How to go from 3D foot scan to orthotics

Based on a 3D foot scan, you can easily and quickly customise an orthotic. This is what it looks like in practice:

  1. Scanning the foot in fixed position (2 to 5 minutes)
  2. Conversion to digital model
  3. Imports in CAD/CAM design software such as LutraCAD
  4. Digital corrections and optimisations
  5. Link to production of customised orthotics or orthotics

That way, you go from foot scan to orthotic in one tight digital workflow. For fast, accurate and reproducible results.
